We will have a Lab Fee to help offset the cost of the many labs that we will be conducting in 8th grade science and Biology this year. Students will be notified of the amount after school begins. Please send this with your child as soon as you can.  Thank you for all you do to make our school and science program exciting and successful!

This is going to be an exciting year for all of us!  I look forward to working with each of you to make this the best school year EVER!  My greatest desire is for each of my students to learn and succeed, so please feel free to contact me at any time.  Each of my classes will have the same basic format, with necessary accommodations being made for the different subjects.  To the left, you will find a link for my homework blogs for A-Day & B-Day classes.  Specific information about assignments, test dates, and due dates for projects will be posted there.  Please check the blog often!  You will also find links for each class that I teach along with Notes and Presentations for each.  Please make use of each of these sections!  They will prove invaluable throughout the year!!

Guidelines

Students will need 4 sections in their binder for my class. One labeled Mav Marks; one labeled Notes & Labs, one labeled Test Prep,  and one labeled Reference.  Notebooks should always be well organized because this will serve as their study guide for each unit.  Students will be required to take notes in class.  All notes will be posted in the appropriate section to the left, and students are welcome to print them so that they may have access to the pictures, charts, and graphs that may be needed to help them study; however, they MUST also write the notes in class when we go over them.  Students should keep up with ALL notes.  DO NOT allow them to throw away their notes when we are finished with a unit.  They will see important concepts throughout the year to be sure that they are mastering the concepts.

We will be conducting at least one lab per unit this year, possibly more.  These will be real inquiry based labs, not simply activities, and many of them will count as test grades!  It is important that students take these seriously and complete all portions to the best of their ability!

Homework will be assigned when necessary and checked for completion.  Each assignment is worth 25pts, and after 4 assignments, a grade will be recorded.

Students will develop and present assigned projects periodically.  These may be reports, posters, and/or hands-on creations and may count as test grades!

Hints for a Great School Year

Students

  • Use your assignment pad--write down EVERYTHING, even if you think you can remember

  • Follow ALL classroom & school rules

  • Review notes NIGHTLY--do not wait until the night before a test

  • Ask for help if you need it

About the Teacher

I am happily married to my husband, Mingo, and we have 3 beautiful children, Isaac-12, Jude-10, & Melynne "Bit Bit"-8. I graduated from Mississippi State University in 2001, with a degree in Elementary Education, and I have Secondary certifications in English, General Sciences, Social Studies, & Biology.  I taught for two years, then was blessed with the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom to my children for several years.  I completed my Master's of Education at Belhaven University in 2010, and I am VERY excited to begin my seventh year at Germantown Middle School!
