What is the fastest growing sport in Mississippi and the nation? Surprisingly, the answer isn't football, basketball, or even soccer. According to the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers and other sports authorities, it's archery.
"Four million Americans are doing it as archery becomes the nation's fastest growing family sport," Reginald Wells of Sports Illustrated writes. Many people may not realize it, but archery is even included in the Olympics.
Ridgeland High School has one of only two existing high school teams in Madison County. Created in 2012, this team competed in its first ever 5A and 6A State Competition and placed third in the state the same year.
Archery is a sport where non-traditional athletes get the chance to test their skills competitively. It is unique in the fact that strength and skill take precedence over speed and agility.
For some, it's all about the competitive nature of the sport. "Competition lets you see how much you can improve," top male shooter Ashton Cowart explained. "It's an awesome stress reliever," fellow archer Holli Gill added. Competitions not only provide chances to improve shooting abilities, but also a fun way of interacting with new people.
Sharing targets with students from rival schools is a great way to test your skills and learn more about those who share the same interests. In order to maintain safety, those shooting must line up facing the targets.
The crowd and other competitors are required to stay behind the waiting line. From RHS, the top three male shooters are Ashton Cowart, Adam Lewis and Martin McCandless. Top female shooters include Shelby Baldwin and Keiwa Higuchi.
"This is the only sport I've ever coached where they get sad when you cancel practice," Bill Richardson, coach of both the Olde Towne Middle and Ridgeland High School archery teams, said. "Most of these students have never had this interest before, so it's great seeing them hold a bow for the first time and really get into it."
Competitions against St. Andrews, New Summit and various other schools in the metro area are in the near future for this 21-member team. On April 16-17, they will compete for the state title once again.
"This time," Richardson said, "we're going for number one."
